Definition from WhatIs.com

CCTV is a TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes. CCTV relies on strategic placement of cameras, and observation of the camera’s input on monitors somewhere. Older CCTV systems used small, low-resolution black and white monitors with no interactive capabilities. Modern CCTV displays can be color, high-resolution displays and can include the ability to zoom in on an image or track something among their features. Talk CCTV allows an overseer to speak to people within range of the camera’s associated speakers.

Maintaining perimeter security in medium- to high-secure areas and installations. Observing behavior of incarcerated inmates and potentially dangerous patients in medical facilities. Overseeing locations that would be hazardous to a human, for example, highly radioactive or toxic industrial environments. Obtaining a visual record of activities in situations where it is necessary to maintain proper security or access controls. CCTV is finding increasing use in law-enforcement, for everything from traffic observation to observation of high-crime areas or neighborhoods.

Such use of CCTV technology has fueled privacy concerns in many parts of the world, particularly in those areas in the UK and Europe where it has become a routine part of police procedure.

Closed Circuit Television Southwark Council

CCTV is one of the most valuable tools we have to make Southwark safer. CCTV is a key service for partner agencies such as the police, Southwark’s anti social behaviour unit, trading standards and environmental enforcement in the detection of crime. Not all of the CCTV cameras you may see around the borough are owned or operated by us. There are a number of Red Route CCTV cameras owned and operated by Transport for London across the borough. All members of the public are encouraged to call if they wish to alert our CCTV operators to any suspicious activity.

The enforcement of traffic and parking regulations utilising CCTV and mobile CCTV is managed separately from the Central Monitoring Suite. CCTV operators receive regular briefing on types of crime that occur in the borough and their locations. All estate CCTV systems are now recorded and monitored from the Central CCTV Monitoring Suite. If you wish to see a list of all of our CCTV camera and their locations, see Freedom of information and data protection. Whilst the data protection act gives individuals the right to access information about themselves, there are times when access to CCTV images can still be denied.

If you wish to see the criteria for access to CCTV images, visit the crime prevention advice page. If you wish to request any CCTV footage, apply for a Freedom of information.
